Tiktok is known as the virtual creative space for, well, everyone! In 2020, Tiktok reported that over 70 artists went viral and landed major music label deals. Most of these deals originated from videos that accumulated over 1 billion views. This type of success is not new, as MySpace and Youtube have birthed many stars in their hay day; however, Tiktok's advantage was partnering with music labels. This capability prevented people from getting flagged for rapping and singing over their favorite artists' beats. And if that was not enough, in March 2022, Tiktok announced the launch of their music distribution platform, named SoundOn.
According to Musicbusinessworldwide.com, "SoundOn pays out 100% royalties to music creators in the first year and 90% after that and provides a range of promotional tools and support." In addition, the artists are allowed to upload their music into Tiktok and Resso. Resso is a newly released music app created by Tiktok's parent company Bytedance. This app allows artists to release their music and share lyrics and information with connected friends. Unfortunately, RESSO is not currently in the United States but is giving Spotify a run for its money in India. Unfortunately, I could not locate any definitive information on when it will enter the United States; however, SoundOn is available in the United States.
SoundOn's sole purpose is to help new artists gain visibility. Because distribution and marketing are 90% of helping artists gain exposure, SoundOn helps relieve the stress from music artists and helps them focus more on their music. On top of their services, distribution is free of charge, and transaction fees are waived. SoundOn will also pay artists 100% of royalties in the first year and 90% after.
According to Ole Obermann, global head of Music at TikTok, our SoundOn teams will guide creators on their journey to the big stage and bring the expertise and power of TikTok to life for the artist. We're incredibly excited about how this will surface and propel new talent and how SoundOn will contribute to an increasingly diverse and growing global music industry." (techcrunch.com)
SoundOn is a great way to enter independent artists into uncharted areas while entering them into Tiktok's viral land. Music artists can find more information about SoundOn at https://us.soundon.global/.
