Hip hop has roots in many forms of music, and has evolved over time. The Bronx, NY is known as the birthplace of hip hop. In 1973 a pioneer by the name of DJ Kool Herc is credited to be its founding father. This new form of artistic musical expression spread worldwide, adapting to each artists personal experiences, imagination, and, perception of life.
Although hip hops sound and delivery has changed, with new artists emerging almost everyday, some rappers have managed to consistently reinvent themselves to remain relevant in this ever changing hip hop industry.
Well known artists such as “2 Chainz” “NAS” “Lil Wayne” and “Jay-Z” to name a few, have had chart topping hits for over 20 plus years. “NAS” and “2Chainz” have both released albums recently. “NAS” dropped “Magic” produced by “Hit-Boy” winter 2021, and “2Chainz” “Dope Don’t Sell Itself” just released early 2022.
Many may ask how they were able to last that long and continue to have an impact on music today. Well, its important to be original, and authentic. These and many others have found their niche, their own sound, and stayed true to that.
Be the first you, not the next someone else. Be inspired, and use that inspiration to create a sound and experience of your own. Authenticity and creativity are two key factors to withstand the test of time in the music business.
In the wise words of some of raps gurus:
"Remind yourself, nobody’s built like you. You design yourself” - Jay-Z
“No ideas original, there’s nothing new under the sun, it’s never what you do, it’s how it’s done” - Nas
We salute those that have paved to way for hip hop today and look forward to what is to come in future.
